What I Do & Where I Work

I’m Giulio Buciuni, professor, researcher, and lifelong observer of how innovation grows and shapes regions and cities.
My work sits at the crossroads of entrepreneurship, innovation, and geography, from classrooms to cities, from peer reviewed journals to government strategy tables.

Born in Italy and based in Dublin, I have spent the past decade exploring how innovation ecosystems emerge and evolve, and how people, institutions, and policies shape that process.

Over the past decade I have shared my work at conferences, public talks, and policy roundtables across Europe and beyond. In 2023 I delivered a TED Talk, and I routinely speak at academic events, public forums, and industry gatherings in Italy, Europe, and Latin America.

I focus on translating research into insights that matter for entrepreneurs, policy makers, and communities.

Ecosystem Strategy
& Policy Work

A significant part of my work involves advising public institutions on how to strengthen their innovation ecosystems. I support cities, regions, and governments in understanding how diverse elements such as research centers, universities, talent, and access to capital interact to shape competitiveness and long term growth.

Books that start conversation

I have authored two books with Il Mulino, Periferie Competitive and Innovatori Outsider, both focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, and the role of place in shaping economic potential.

My most recent publication explores how local contexts influence entrepreneurial development, sparking dialogue across academia, policy, and industry in Ireland, Italy, and beyond. Books are for me a way to distill research, fieldwork, and conversations and open them up to new audiences. I am currently working on a book with Oxford University Press, scheduled for publication in 2026.
